German philosopher and physician Ludwig Büchner (1824–99) wrote Kraft und Stoff in 1855. At a time when German philosophy was dominated by idealism, Büchner advocated materialism and began the freethinkers' movement in Germany. First published in 1864, this translation of the eighth edition brought his work to England.
