Drawing on his papers, this 1799 two-volume account traces the long life of actor and playwright Charles Macklin (c.1699–1797), who has been credited with spurring the move towards realism in the theatre. His career was marked by controversy, fierce rivalries and notoriety for the manslaughter of a fellow actor.
