The Italian mathematician Carlo Alberto Castigliano (1847–84) provided the first full proof of virtual work methods for structural analysis in his 1873 dissertation. Published as Théorie de l'équilibre des systèmes élastiques et ses applications in 1879, it is here reissued in the first English translation of 1919.
