This book offers original readings of twentieth-century English novels through the lens of the female intellect. In key texts by H. G. Wells, D. H. Lawrence, Dorothy L. Sayers, A. S. Byatt and more, the female scholar is shown to be depicted as transgressive and marginalized, confirming cultural understandings of rationality as male.
